Jon Auer has an interesting musical career and label. Along with Ken Stringfellow formed in the late 80's one of the Power Pop bands most important 90, The Posies . This band from Seattle rescued the influences of pop / rock imprint 60 and Big Star Music , banda for which Auer has played guitars and vocals done since 1993 actively participating in the 2005 album In Space . Auer
launched a couple of good EPs in this decade, but nothing about the quality of this long-term as opposed to his work with The Posies is more focused on the Pop side of the rock composition. Those who heard the band's classic album, Frosting on the Beater 1993 which combined grunge and power pop styles may not think is good, but wrong.
Personally, I think Songs from the Year of Our Demise shows the most interesting sense of melody by Jon Auer with beautiful compositions that are structured on vocal harmonies and melancholic and intimate guitar. Nonetheless there are some doses of Rock in the loudness and distorted "Josephine" and "You Used to Drive Me Around", the staccato rhythm of "Four Letter Word" or power pop of "My Sweet Unknown." In any case
to appreciate this album in its real dimension one must have a propensity to listen to this kind of pop music centered on smart, sweet and nostalgic, which is appreciated when you listen to compositions as delicate as "Cemetery Song" "Daytime Lullaby" or "Wicked World". Do not expect to hear a happy album, but rather a simple and pleasant exercise composition moves to pop some elements of the alternative music of the 90, but in a very nice and neat. NPR Music recommended it as one of the favorite gifts for Christmas 2006.
One of those discs anthology for lovers of good music and jewelry that go unnoticed by the popular taste.
